The most important line here is that you love him and he loves you. Sometimes it comes down to just that! Thanks for being so honest with us.

I love this post.

My husband was raised in a very meat-and-potatoes Pennsylvania-Dutch family. His parents live exactly exactly the way they did when he was a little boy. Nothing has changed in 40 years. So to Kevin, change=bad. Imagine how excited he was when I started researching where our meat comes from and then announcing that I won't cook it anymore--not until we get some that costs three times as much and is 250 miles away.

Yeah. But he loves me. He might not jump on my bandwagon from the start, but little things start coming up. Like him calling his mom and asking her to price grass-fed steak for me. (Yeah...that was hilarious. She's like...grass-fed what??)

And it makes me think the world might be a very different place if all of us were more comfortable living on the margins of our ever-shifting paradigms.

Wouldn't it ever. My life alone would be a very different place if I could remember to live more on the margins.

This was a really, really good read. (And like Beth I got a tiiiiny bit misty eyed at one point.)

I think that's what marriage is. It's about skirting the line and moving back and forth to make each other feel that the way they see/do things is also "correct" even if it's not the way you'd see/do it.

I also agree with Beth that I think as American's we've been taught that we're right. There is no right or wrong in anything - there's only a different way of going about it. You learn as you go - but you have to be willing to to accept that your way isn't the only way.

I can't wait till he gets back and still loves you for all your weirdness... even if I don't hear from you for a while.

Ah! I loved this post. Not gonna lie I got slightly teary eyed. I myself have also struggled with the "different worlds" in a marriage :) My husband is from Mozambique in Southern Africa and we do have some cultural conflicts, etc. But I like the way you speak about us as Americans sometimes freaking out when we see something different - maybe it is because we have been taught (and then learned the truth) that we are always doing the right thing. I like the way you put these ideas together :)
