Homesteading (Or Not?)

I meant to do a Sustainability Saturday roundup of delicious and utilitarian canning recipes this weekend, but a) I had a roller derby bout which totally leveled me and b)… I went and bought another 25lbs of tomatoes and the canning continues this week! What was I thinking? (I’ll tell you what I was thinking: “I do not have enough quarts of tomatoes to make as much tomato soup as I will want to eat this winter.”)

Canning and Gratitude

This week, most of my spare time has been devoted to this… I am new to canning, and the first couple of days that I plugged away at this pile of produce (from Sustainable Eats Tomato Army Order), I felt like I had ordered way too much and gotten myself in over my head. I didn’t know what I was doing, so every batch was accompanied by endless internet searches and second-guessing.

The American News Bubble

I read an article the other day, or maybe it was in an interview on NPR, about how American media fails to address climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts while media in the rest of the world is reporting (thereby normalizing) actual real life progress being made. An American media climate change ignorance bubble. (If anyone read this or heard this too, shoot a link my way so I can put it here?)

Newbie Garden Report

As many of you may know, I tried a little bit of gardening this year. Unfortunately, due to moving, deployment, and a crippling anxiety about trying new things and failing spectacularly, my garden ended up being much smaller than originally intended. So to begin with, I have a small list of garden failings for the year. I should probably call them something more forgiving, but they feel like failures and you might as well call a duck a duck.
